I’m increasingly convinced that the willingness to change your mind is the ultimate sign of intelligence. The most impressive people I know change their minds often in response to new information. It’s like a software update. The goal isn’t to be right. It’s to find the truth.

Many people think intelligence is about always being right.
I’ve started to think it’s the opposite.
One of the strongest signs of intelligence is the willingness to change your mind when presented with better evidence.
Changing your mind doesn’t mean you were weak or inconsistent. It means you’ve learned something new. It means your understanding of the world has improved.
The problem is that we often attach our identity to our opinions. Once an idea becomes part of who we are, letting go of it feels like losing a part of ourselves. So we defend beliefs instead of examining them.
Science works because it’s willing to revise its conclusions. Good scientists don’t become attached to hypotheses; they become attached to finding the truth.
Perhaps we should do the same.
Holding the same opinion for years isn’t necessarily a sign of wisdom. Sometimes it’s simply a sign that we haven’t updated our software.
The goal isn’t to win every argument. The goal is to understand reality a little better than we did yesterday.
Changing your mind isn’t admitting defeat. It’s evidence that your mind is still learning.
