What is Analytical Lens
An analytical lens is a mental framework that helps you examine a situation from a specific perspective.
The same problem can look completely different depending on the lens you apply.
For example:
Problem: “How do we improve a product?”
Using different lenses:
- Customer Lens: What problem does the user actually have?
- Systems Lens: How do different components interact?
- Constraints Lens: What limitations prevent improvement?
- Trade-off Lens: What are we sacrificing to gain something else?
- Time Lens: How will this change in the future?
A better thinker does not immediately jump to solutions.

Many problems are solved based on assumptions inherited from the past. First principles thinking removes assumptions and breaks a problem down into basic truths.
Break everything down to fundamental truths.
Ask:
- What is fundamentally true?
- What do I know for certain?
- What assumptions am I making?
- If I started from scratch, how would I solve this?
Use this lens when:
- Existing solutions feel inefficient
- You want innovation
- You are questioning assumptions

Systems Lens
Nothing exists in isolation. Many problems are not caused by one thing. They emerge from interactions between multiple components.
A system is more than the sum of its parts.
For example, a company’s performance depends on:

Improving one part may accidentally damage another.
Ask:
- What system is this part of?
- How do parts interact with each other?
- What feedback loops exist?
- What are the upstream and downstream effects?
- Where are the bottlenecks?
Think in networks instead of events.

- Changes create unexpected effects
- Multiple factors influence outcomes

Looking backward to find patterns, precedents, and root causes.

Steps:
- Choose a concept to learn. Select a topic you’re interested in learning about and write it at the top of a blank page in a notebook.
- Teach it to yourself or someone else. Write everything you know about a topic out as if you were explaining it to yourself. Alternately, actually teach it to someone else.
- Return to the source material if you get stuck. Go back to whatever you’re learning from – a book, lecture notes, podcast – and fill the gaps in your knowledge.
- Simplify your explanations and create analogies. Streamline your notes and explanation, further clarifying the topic until it seems obvious. Additionally, think of analogies that feel intuitive.
