They’re not.

Schooling is a system for delivering information. Learning is what happens when that information changes how we think, act, and understand the world.

In the industrial age, information was scarce. Today, information is abundant. The challenge is no longer access; it’s making sense of what we consume.

Real learning isn’t measured by the number of books read, courses completed, or certificates earned. It’s measured by whether we can apply knowledge, solve problems, and make better predictions about the world.

I’ve come to think of learning as building a knowledge graph inside our minds. Every new idea becomes valuable only when it connects to something we already know.

This is why simply consuming information often feels productive but leads to little growth. Learning requires processing, connecting, retrieving, and applying ideas.

In an AI-driven world, knowledge is increasingly available on demand. The real advantage comes from developing better mental models and stronger connections between ideas.

Learning is no longer about collecting information.

It’s about building a better system for thinking.

The perfect task manager. The perfect note-taking app. The perfect workflow.

What I’ve learned is that productivity problems are rarely system problems. More often, they’re execution problems.

It’s easy to mistake organizing for doing. We spend hours refining our tools, saving articles, watching productivity videos, and building elaborate workflows. It feels productive, but very little actual work gets done.

The same thing happens with knowledge. Reading ten books about productivity won’t make us productive. At some point, learning must turn into action.

I’ve also noticed that productivity breaks down when it becomes the goal itself. Checking off tasks feels good, but a completed checklist doesn’t automatically lead to a meaningful life.

The real question isn’t, "How can I get more done?"

It’s, "Am I working on the right things?"

A simple system that helps you take action is often better than a sophisticated system that keeps you busy managing it.

Productivity is not about maximizing every minute of the day. It’s about consistently making progress on things that matter.

The goal is not to build the perfect productivity system.

The goal is to build a life that doesn’t require one.

Practice. Break.

When learning something new, most people make one of two mistakes:

They either ignore best practices completely, or they follow them blindly.

A better approach is:

Learn the best practices for doing X (by experience, talking to others, reading books etc.

Do X a number of times following the best practices.

Identify the situations in which the best practices don't make sense and ignore them in those situations.

This is where expertise begins.

Beginners need rules because they lack context. Experts understand the context behind the rules. They know not only what works, but also when it works and when it doesn’t. Every best practice was created under certain assumptions and constraints.

The goal of learning isn’t to memorize best practices forever. It’s to understand the principles that gave rise to them.

Once you understand the principles, you can adapt them, modify them, or even ignore them when the situation demands it.

First learn the rules.
Then practice the rules.
Eventually, learn when to break the rules.

Whenever my mind is busy, my breathing changes. Whenever I’m anxious, my thoughts race. And whenever my emotions become intense, both my breathing and thinking seem to follow.

Breath, thoughts, and emotions are deeply connected. Change one, and the other two respond.

Think about a stressful situation. A deadline is approaching, an important conversation is pending, or something unexpected happens. Thoughts start spinning. Emotions become stronger. Breathing becomes shallow and fast.

Now try the opposite.

Pause for a moment and take a few slow, deep breaths. Almost immediately, the mind becomes a little quieter. The emotional intensity drops. The situation may not have changed, but our response to it has.

What makes breath unique is that it sits between the body and the mind. We cannot directly command our emotions to disappear, and stopping thoughts is rarely easy. But we can consciously slow our breathing.

That simple act often creates enough space to think clearly and respond wisely.

So, the next time you feel overwhelmed, don’t start by fixing your thoughts or emotions. Start with your breath.

Sometimes the shortest path to a calmer mind is just one conscious breath away.

This note is inspired from an article by Tim Urban, prolific writer and an author of famous blog Wait But Why.

Every day, we wake up with 1,000 precious minutes; 100 blocks of 10 minutes each. These blocks represent the currency of our time, spent moment by moment, until the day ends. [^1]

Pause and reflect:

How many blocks are invested in your future versus enjoyed in the present?

How many are shared with others versus spent alone?

How many are used to create versus consume?

How many nurture your body, mind, or neither?

Imagine these blocks arranged in a grid. If you labeled each block with its purpose, would it align with your goals? Is 10 minutes of meditation worth one block? Could 20 minutes of reading, adding 15 books a year, deserve two? If Instagram reels bring joy, how many blocks will you give them?

Some blocks are non-negotiable—health, growth, or connection. Others may stay flexible or blank, left for spontaneity. Now consider yesterday’s grid, filled with how you actually spent your time. How does it compare to your ideal? What can it teach you?

Each day offers a fresh set of blocks. Use them wisely.

The unexamined life is not worth living.

At first, that sounds a bit extreme. After all, most people are busy living life, not examining it.

But the more I think about it, the more I understand what he meant.

It’s easy to spend life on autopilot. We follow routines, pursue goals, consume information, and stay busy. Days become weeks, weeks become years. Yet we rarely stop and ask: Why am I doing this? Is this what I truly value?

An examined life doesn’t mean constantly analyzing every decision. It simply means creating moments to reflect.

What matters most to me?

Am I spending my time accordingly?

What am I optimizing for?

Without reflection, it’s possible to achieve many things and still feel disconnected from them.

In a world full of notifications, entertainment, and endless distractions, reflection has become surprisingly rare. Yet it is reflection that turns experience into wisdom.

I’ve come to believe that growth doesn’t come only from doing more. It also comes from pausing, observing, and understanding ourselves a little better.

The goal isn’t to live perfectly.

The goal is to live intentionally.

Perhaps that’s what Socrates was pointing to: a life worth living is a life worth examining.

You never play the wrong note. It’s the note you play after that makes it right.

In music, a note can sound out of place. Yet a musician doesn’t stop and apologize to the audience. Instead, they continue playing. They adapt. They find a way to resolve the tension and make the note fit the larger story of the song.

Music isn’t just about playing the “right” notes. It’s about the relationship between notes; the tension, the resolution, and the emotion created in between. Sometimes what sounds wrong in isolation sounds perfect in context.

At first, it sounds like a musical trick. But the more I thought about it, the more it felt like a lesson about life.

We all make mistakes. Projects fail. Plans change. We say things we wish we hadn’t. Mistakes are inevitable, but they don’t define us. The mistake itself is rarely the most important part. What matters is what we do next.

Do we learn from it? Do we adapt? Do we keep moving?

A failed project can teach us something valuable. An unexpected setback can open doors we never considered. What looks like a wrong note today may become an essential part of our story tomorrow.

Perfection isn’t the goal. Recovery, adaptation, and growth are.

So the next time when you hit a wrong note in life, don’t dwell on it for too long. Focus on the next note.

Because in the right context, there are no wrong notes.

दुनिया के उस्सूलो से इतना वाकेफ़ नहीं है वो,
अभी तो मग्न है 'अविझ' अपने अंदाज़ में |

Comment

This ghazal weaves themes of freedom, introspection, and individuality.

Freedom from Constraints

Celebrate someone who is not bound by the traditional rules of rhyme and rhythm (रदीफ़-क़ाफ़िया or बहर). This can symbolize a person who lives authentically, unshackled by societal norms or expectations.

Sensitivity and Growth

A subtle warning is given to tread carefully with words (वाक्बाण), as the heart may have healed but retains its sensitivity. This reflects a journey from pain to resilience, with the heart no longer easily wounded.

Harmony in Creativity

The imagery of a bridge made of sensitivity (संवेदना) and music shows a deep inner world where emotions and art coexist. This symbolizes a person constructing their identity through intense passion and focus.

Power of the Present

Upon discovering the power of the present moment, the subject no longer dwells in the past or future. This indicates a profound spiritual or mindful awakening, embracing the now as the only reality.

Unique Individuality

The closing verse encapsulates the idea of someone unfamiliar with the world’s rigid rules but deeply immersed in their own unique style and essence. The name अविझ becomes a metaphor for self-expression and individuality.

This ghazal beautifully explores themes of play, wandering, self-discovery, and spiritual transcendence. Reposting here on my blog.

Ghazal

Meaning

"Ocean of Joy"

From the Sky that star has fallen down,
For the sake of play he has played that game.
Neither knowing a stop nor the destination,
For the sake of journey he has wandered the world.
And wandering in the world filled with duality,
At last that tired being found him self.
Whatever reflection his mind-mirror has captured,
From that reflection he canvased his own Krishna.
Wherever his soul gazed,
his ego got destroyed.
Beyond whirlpool of feelings and his little intelligence,
'Aviz' has found the Ocean of Joy.

Comments

Cosmic Play

A star falls from the sky, not as a tragedy but as part of a divine play (લીલા). This reflects the beauty of life’s cycles, where even something as monumental as a falling star is seen as a joyful act in the grand cosmic scheme.

Endless Wandering

This couplet speaks of aimless wandering—without rest (વિસામો) or destination (મંઝિલ). It reflects the human condition of seeking, exploring, and moving, often for the sake of the journey itself, rather than a fixed endpoint.

Discovery Through Exhaustion

In the pursuit of happiness in a world filled with sorrow, the individual ultimately becomes weary and turns inward, discovering themselves. This highlights the idea that true joy lies not in external pursuits but in self-realization.

Inner Reflection

The man sees a reflection of his true self in the mirror of the mind (મનનાં મુકુર), and it is as divine and complex as Krishna (કૃષ્ણ). This suggests that within every individual lies a divine essence waiting to be recognized.

Death of Ego

Wherever the light of awareness (નજર જ્યોતિ) is cast, the ego (અહં) dissolves. This couplet conveys the transformative power of awareness and mindfulness, where understanding and clarity lead to the end of pride and self-centeredness.

Spiritual Union

By transcending the turbulence of the mind (ચિત્તનાં વમળો) and the intellect (બુદ્ધિ), the poet, અવિઝ, experiences the blissful ocean of joy (આનંદ સાગર). This suggests a state of spiritual awakening, where inner peace and boundless joy are attained.

Creating a Digital Garden blog is a great way to share my ideas and experiences with others.

It allows me to document my learning journey, connect with like-minded people, and build an online presence.

A Digital Garden blog is also a great way to build an audience.

Finally, it's a great way to express myself creatively, and potentially inspire others in the process.
